The Harvest Festival at St.Peter's Church, Burnley, in October 2009, raised funds for Friends of Sikinga

St Peter's Harvest Festival: On behalf of Friends of Sikinga, Pat Spurin wishes to thank people for their kindness and generosity in the donation of Harvest Gifts; £339.21 given in Church and £156.81 given by the school - total £496.03.

All of the above will go towards the education of children in Sikinga. To some this may seem a strange use of proceeds from a harvest festival. But in recent years there has been a move away within the diocese from distributing donated food items within the local parish to financially supporting aid projects in the third world aimed at making deprived people more self sufficient. To quote from the Rector of St.Peter's, Canon Tom Bill;

" Some money from our plenty to those who have nothing is much more beneficial than a parcel of fruit and vegetables or a few tins of beans distributed to local people who don't really need them and who may in fact receive back what they have given!"
