A letter from Milton, who takes care of administration in Sikinga on bahalf of FOS
May 2009

Everyone is fine here except Samson who has been ill but is now recovering slowly. I hope that you are fine too. It's now raining here and people are busy working on their farms. Some have already planted but some it's when they are planting now. We are praying that the rains will be sufficient to enable us get a good harvest.
Prices of food here are going up every day. Just last month a 2kg tin of maize was going at Ks. 55 but now it has gone up to Ks. 80. We do get this maize from the our neighbouring country Uganda. The average income of most people here at Sikinga is about Ksh. 100 a day. Below is a small list of commodities and their prices:
maize flour 2kg tin + grinding -85/=
Sugar 1kg -75/=
beef 1kg -200
sukuma wiki 3 leaves - 1/=
cooking fat - from 5/= for one tablespoon (this is what most go for)
This situation forces most people to plan for one main meal a day and that is supper when everyone is at home.

Two weeks ago we hosted the president at Sikinga. People were very excited to see three military helicopters land at Sikinga playing ground and to see the president with their own eyes. He promised to get the Mungatsi - Bungoma road tarmacked. He was on a Western Kenya tour to inspect the projects initiated by the government's Costituency Development Fund Programme of which Sikinga secondary school is one of them. While at Sikinga, he created a new Nambale district. The old Busia district has now been divided into four districts(Nambale, Butula, Samia and Bunyala). Generally on the side of education, Sikinga community is improving as the number of university graduates is increasing and the number of those joining university and colleges is increasing. This is a good step forward and we believe that with our new secondary school, we will be able to improve more.

We watch a lot of English football and look forward to seeing Burnley Football Club join the premier legue.

Nobody is using the guest house at the moment but it is well looked after. Church guests use it from time to time.
Greetings from all family members.
Good wishes to you and all our friends.
Milton
